Sustainability
Great Northern Hotel is proud to be Green Key certified. Through key initiatives such as replacing our lights with LED, reducing water and energy consumption, and continuing to champion sustainable practices we have shown our commitment to reduce our environmental impact. We are dedicated to acting as a responsible business entity and constantly evolving and implementing practices that provide social and environmental benefits.
Green Key is an international eco-label for tourism facilities. Since 1994, Green Key has been a leading standard of excellence in environmental responsibility and sustainable operation within the tourism industry. The Green Key programme is run internationally by the Foundation for Environmental Education. In England it is managed by the environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy.
Green Key provides a well-proven framework for an establishment to work with its environmental management on sustainability issues, including awareness raising. The high environmental standards expected of these establishments are maintained through rigorous documentation and frequent on-site audits.
Green Key is eligible for hotels, hostels, small accommodations, campsites, holiday parks, conference centres, restaurants, and attractions.
For guests, a Green Key shows that the establishment is committed to reducing the environmental impact of their stay. The Green Key programme is linked to the Sustainable Development Goals 2015-2030 addressed by the United Nations.

OUR CONTINUED FOCUS
WATER CONSUMPTION
We have water-saving dual toilet flush installed in all bedrooms, public areas, and back-of-house toilets. Our bathrooms are equipped with water-saving shower flow reducer installed in the taps.
ENERGY SAVING
Initiatives include energy efficient lighting and AC pipe insulation. We continue to monitor our energy consumption daily and actively look for new technologies and practices to reduce consumption further.
WASTE MANAGEMENT
The hotel separates waste into 5 categories – food, general, recycling, glass, and cardboard. We also ask our waste management company to carry out regular waste audits to identify areas of improvement.
ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY
We always try to make environmentally friendly choices wherever possible – such as our eco-friendly laundry bags, initiatives to use more seasonal produce in our kitchen and transitioning to sustainable workwear.
CONTINOUS DEVELOPMENT
Great Northern Hotel has a dedicated Sustainability Leader who monitors the annual action plan for constant improvements and arranges monthly meetings with each department’s Sustainability Champions to discuss the status of the action plan and any new initiatives that could be implemented in the hotel.
